The Eastern Hognose Snake (
Heterodon platirhinos) has a large range throughout the southern United States, extending as far north as Massachusetts and Michigan. Despite this large range, its conservation status varies among states, from being threatened (such as in New Hampshire) to not threatened (such as in Georgia).
What makes this an interesting snake is its how it defends itself. This snake will puff itself up with air and spread the skin around its head and neck out to appear larger. It will hiss and pretend to strike, though it rarely ever does bite. If that isn't enough to deter an attacker, it will play dead, just like in the cartoons- rolling over with its tongue hanging out. Evolution sometimes works in funny ways!
