Cool Animal of the Week #8- The Fennec Fox

The Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda) lives in the Sahara desert in northern Africa. It is the smallest species of fox in the world, however its has the largest ears (relative to its body) in the canine family. Their large ears not only help them in being more sensitive to sound, but also help them cool off in the desert. Fennec foxes will dig burrows underground where they can escape the daytime sun. Other adaptations they have to living in the desert include hairy feet to protect from the blistering sand, and insulating fur that protects them not only from getting too hot, but also protects them from getting too cold at night.
